The Piece

The Continuum Walnut Credenza was built around one defining detail: a continuous walnut front where the grain moves uninterrupted across the doors and drawers.

The Front

Rather than treating each door and drawer face as a separate panel, the walnut boards were carefully selected, sequenced, and laid out so the figure travels across the entire cabinet. The result is a front that reads almost like one long composition.

The Walnut

From a distance, the piece feels clean, architectural, and restrained. Up close, the story becomes more detailed. The walnut carries natural variation, curl, depth, and warmth, giving the cabinet a sense of movement without adding ornament. Every line is kept simple so the material remains the focus.

The Form

The long, low profile gives the piece a strong presence, while the tapered walnut legs lift it just enough to keep it visually light. Small round brass knobs add a subtle contrast against the walnut without interrupting the overall rhythm of the grain.

The Construction

The cabinet is built as furniture, not casework. It is solid black walnut throughout, with no veneered panels. The drawer boxes are solid maple with dovetailed corners, running on Blum soft close hardware. The walnut front is laid out and sequenced before the cabinet is assembled, so the grain stays continuous across every opening once the doors and drawers are fitted. The cabinet is designed and joined to accommodate seasonal wood movement, so a solid front of this width stays flat and the reveals stay true year round.

The Interior

The piece shown holds three drawers, four doors, and two adjustable shelves. Inside, the cabinet continues the same material language with a walnut interior, making the piece feel finished whether open or closed. It is designed to function as a credenza, sideboard, or storage cabinet, and the interior of your commission is configured around what it will hold.

The Continuum Walnut Credenza is a custom walnut cabinet for rooms where furniture is expected to anchor the space. From the first drawer to the final door, it reads as one uninterrupted piece of walnut: storage designed as a single composition.

Meet the designer and builder

Jerry Rodman

Jerry Rodman founded Statement Chicago and designs every piece we make. He left a corporate career to build furniture, and for years he built each commission himself. Today Jerry and his team of four build every piece by hand in our Chicago workshop, and he leads each project from the first conversation to the day it is delivered.

More about Jerry

Jerry started the business eleven years ago in Chicago's Bucktown neighborhood, first as Bucktown Built and now as Statement Chicago. The shop is known for large dining tables and complex custom furniture.

Every commission begins with how you live and the room the piece will live in. Jerry presents three design options, refines the one you choose, and stays involved through delivery.

Custom to the last detail

Built Around You

Every Continuum Walnut Credenza is built to order. The piece shown is one interpretation. Yours can be different in any number of ways.

Grain Layout

The boards are selected and sequenced for each commission, so no two fronts read the same. Yours is laid out specifically for your piece.

Interior

The piece shown holds three drawers, four doors, and two adjustable shelves. Your interior is configured around what the piece will hold: walnut shelves, drawers, or a combination, built for a bar, media, or open storage. The walnut interior continues the material of the front so the piece feels finished whether open or closed.

Size

The piece shown is 90 inches wide. Custom widths, heights, and depths are available. Describe the wall and the piece will be sized to fit it.

Hardware

Small round brass knobs as shown, left unlacquered to age naturally. Drawers run on Blum soft close hardware. Alternate hardware and finishes are available if the room calls for a different detail.

Species

Black walnut as shown, sourced from local Illinois sawmills. Also available in white oak and other species on request.

Finish

2K polyurethane spray finish applied in our commercial spray booth, or hand rubbed oil finish using Odie's Universal Oil. We recommend the finish based on the walnut selected, how the piece will be used, and the level of daily wear it will see.

Before you order

What makes the Continuum Walnut Credenza different?

The continuous grain front. Rather than treating each door and drawer as a separate panel, the walnut is selected and sequenced so the figure travels uninterrupted across the entire cabinet. The front reads as one long composition.

Is there a version built for the office?

Yes. The Continuum Conference Room Credenza is the same cabinet specified for a boardroom, with AV hardware housed inside with ventilation and rear access, power routed to a floor box, and the walnut matched to a conference table where one is part of the same project. This page covers the residential credenza.

Is the grain really continuous across the doors and drawers?

Yes. The boards are laid out so the grain carries across the reveals from one face to the next. It takes careful selection and sequencing, and it is the reason the piece reads the way it does.

What wood is it made from?

Solid black walnut throughout, sourced from local Illinois sawmills, with a walnut interior and adjustable walnut shelves. The figure varies from board to board, carrying the natural curl, depth, and warmth walnut is known for.

How much does the Continuum Walnut Credenza cost?

Continuum commissions begin at $10,500. Final pricing depends on the overall dimensions, the interior configuration, the walnut selected, the hardware, and the finish. The 90 inch piece shown is quoted individually.

How is the cabinet built?

As furniture, not casework. Solid black walnut throughout with no veneered panels, drawer boxes of solid maple with dovetailed corners, and Blum soft close hardware. The cabinet is designed and joined to accommodate seasonal wood movement, so a solid front of this width stays flat and the reveals stay true year round.

Can I customize the interior?

Yes. The piece shown holds three drawers, four doors, and two adjustable shelves. Your interior is configured around what the piece will hold, whether that is a bar setup, media, or open storage. Shelves, drawers, or a combination are built to the commission.

Can the Continuum be made in a custom size?

Yes. The piece shown is 90 inches wide. Custom widths, heights, and depths are all available. Describe the wall and the opening and the piece will be sized to fit.

What hardware does it use?

Small round brass knobs, left unlacquered to age naturally over time. Drawers run on Blum soft close hardware. Alternate hardware and finishes are available on request.

What finish options are available?

Two. The 2K polyurethane spray finish is applied in our commercial spray booth and provides a hard, durable surface for daily use. The hand rubbed oil finish using Odie's Universal Oil penetrates the wood and deepens with age.

How long does it take to build?

Lead time is 10 to 12 weeks from the time your commission is confirmed and deposit is received. This includes material selection, milling, finishing, and quality review before the piece leaves our Chicago workshop.

Who builds the Continuum?

Every Continuum is developed directly with founder Jerry Rodman, a furniture maker who has been in business for 11 years, and built by his team of four carpenters in our workshop on Chicago's north side. The same people who select the walnut, sequence the continuous grain front, build the cabinet, and finish it stay with the commission from the first conversation to the day it arrives in your home. There is no production line and no outsourcing.

Delivery

Every piece is built to order in our Chicago workshop, and delivery is coordinated directly with you once it is finished. We build and ship nationwide. Our white glove delivery partners review the access path, handle any assembly and set the piece in place in your home.

Care

Care depends on the finish. A 2K polyurethane finish needs little more than a soft, damp cloth; avoid harsh chemical cleaners. A hand rubbed oil finish benefits from a light coat of Odie's Universal Oil once a year, or whenever the surface looks dry. With either finish, use trivets under hot dishes, wipe up standing water and keep the piece out of prolonged direct sunlight.

Lifetime warranty

Every piece is covered against manufacturing defects for the life of the piece. We stand behind what we build.
