Noir Relief Sideboard

The Noir Relief Sideboard was the first piece Jerry Rodman built under his own name, a walnut cabinet with hand-carved, ebonized oak doors on a brass base, and the beginning of Statement Chicago.

The shell is solid walnut through the entire carcass, and each door panel is solid white oak, hand-carved in relief and then ebonized black. Because the carving is done by hand, no two Noirs are ever alike.
The doors run on concealed hardware and open with a press, so nothing interrupts the carved fronts, and the brass base is left unlacquered to age toward the warmth of the walnut over the years.

Selected for character

No two commissions begin with the same wood.

We source for proportion, color and figure, then show you the boards before the first cut is made.
Finish guidance

A finish selected for how you live.

There is no universally correct finish. We guide the choice based on the wood, the room and the realities of daily use.

The materials

Woods we build with.

Every piece is built from boards we select for you. These are the species we work in most, each sourced and chosen for its grain, width, and character.
Common questions

What clients ask before commissioning.

What kinds of custom furniture do you build?

Dining tables, conference and boardroom tables, executive desks, sideboards and bar cabinets, and one-off bespoke commissions. Most of our work is solid hardwood, often paired with steel or brass, and every piece is made to order.

How much does custom furniture cost?

Commissions begin at $7,000 and rise with scale, material, and complexity. Because every piece is built to order, a conversation about your room and the piece produces a precise quote.

How long does a commission take?

Lead time is 10 to 12 weeks from the time the commission is confirmed and deposit is received, covering material sourcing, milling, joinery, finishing, and quality review in our Chicago workshop.

Where are you located?

Our workshop and showroom are on Chicago's north side, open by appointment. We build everything here, in Chicago, and ship nationwide.

Can dimensions, wood, and finish be fully customized?

Yes. Every piece is built to the dimensions of your room, in the species and finish you choose. Size, proportion, wood, base design, and finish are all developed with you before work begins.

What woods and materials do you work with?

Black walnut, white oak, claro and Oregon black walnut, big leaf maple, monkeypod, and blackened Bavarian oak, often paired with blackened steel or unlacquered brass. Boards are selected for figure and shown to you before the first cut.

Do you deliver and install outside Chicago?

Yes. We build and ship nationwide, working with trusted white glove delivery partners who deliver and set each piece in place.

Do you work with architects and interior designers?

Yes. We collaborate with clients, designers, and architects on residential and commercial commissions, including shop drawings and finish samples.

What makes Statement Chicago different?

Every piece is built by Jerry Rodman, a furniture maker who has been in business for 11 years, and his team of four carpenters. There is no production line and no outsourcing. You work directly with the people who build your piece, and it is made to be an heirloom.
