The Piece
The Axis Walnut Desk is built around a simple reality: most of us spend more time at our desk than almost anywhere else in the home. If a desk is going to hold that much of your daily life, it should be more than a flat surface and a few drawers.
The Walnut
The solid walnut top brings warmth and natural movement to the room. The grain carries the depth and figure walnut is known for, giving the desk presence without ornament and a surface that only improves with years of use. At an inch and a half thick, the top reads substantial without looking heavy.
The Bases
The ebonized oak bases give the piece weight, contrast, and architectural structure. The combination feels grounded without being heavy, refined without becoming delicate. Where the walnut is warm and organic, the black bases are spare and exact, and the two together are what make Axis feel intentional rather than ordinary.
The Work Surface
The working surface is designed to stay quiet and to keep up with you. A flexible cord-management system routes cables through a large pass-through opening, wide enough to carry power, chargers, and cables out of sight and to add or swap in new devices as your setup changes. The point is a desk that evolves with the technology on it rather than locking you into the way you work today, whether it sits against a wall or out in the middle of the room.
The Storage
Four integrated drawers, all the same size, provide generous storage for the things that need to stay close but out of sight: documents, notebooks, devices, chargers, and everyday tools. The fronts are grain-matched walnut, cut so the figure runs continuously across the desk, so the storage reads as part of the top rather than an addition to it. Each drawer is dovetailed, runs on soft-close slides, and opens with a push rather than a pull, keeping the fronts clean and free of hardware.
The Construction
The top is solid walnut, an inch and a half thick, built to carry four integrated drawers and a clear working span while still reading light. It is attached to the bases with threaded inserts and slotted metal connectors, our standard method, which hold the top firmly while letting the solid wood expand and contract with the seasons without splitting or cupping. The drawers are dovetailed boxes on soft-close, push-to-open slides with grain-matched walnut fronts, and the cord-management opening is integrated into the surface rather than added beneath it. The desk also disassembles, so a piece this size can be moved through the house or to a new room and set back together with ease. Every Axis is built to order in our Chicago workshop.
The Finish
Every Axis Walnut Desk is finished one of two ways. The 2K polyurethane spray finish, applied in our commercial spray booth, gives a hard, durable surface suited to daily use. The hand rubbed oil finish using Odie's Universal Oil penetrates the wood rather than sitting on top of it, leaving the surface alive under your hands. We recommend the finish based on how the desk will be used and the level of daily wear it will see.
A well-made desk changes the way a workspace feels. It gives the room a center. It makes sitting down to work feel more deliberate. The Axis Walnut Desk is for the person who spends real time at their desk and wants that time to happen in a place that feels considered, beautiful, and built to last.

Meet the designer and builder
Jerry Rodman
Jerry Rodman founded Statement Chicago and designs every piece we make. He left a corporate career to build furniture, and for years he built each commission himself. Today Jerry and his team of four build every piece by hand in our Chicago workshop, and he leads each project from the first conversation to the day it is delivered.
More about Jerry
Jerry started the business eleven years ago in Chicago's Bucktown neighborhood, first as Bucktown Built and now as Statement Chicago. The shop is known for large dining tables and complex custom furniture.
Every commission begins with how you live and the room the piece will live in. Jerry presents three design options, refines the one you choose, and stays involved through delivery.
WGN featured his Ancient Kauri Dining Table, a ten foot table made from New Zealand kauri that was growing about two thousand years ago.

Before you order
What is the Axis Walnut Desk?
A solid walnut desk on ebonized oak bases, with four integrated drawers and a flexible cord-management system. Every piece is built to order in our Chicago workshop.
Is there a version built for the office?
Yes. The Axis Walnut Executive Desk is the same design specified for the private office, with drawer layouts planned per role, cable management coordinated with your IT team, shop drawings for the design team, and wood held back so multiple offices match. This page covers the home-office version.
How much does the Axis Walnut Desk cost?
Axis commissions begin at $8,500. Final pricing depends on the overall dimensions, drawer configuration, the walnut selected, cord-management needs, and finish. Every desk is built to order and quoted around the way it will be used.
What wood is it made from?
The top is solid walnut, sourced from local Illinois sawmills and chosen for warmth and natural movement. The bases are white oak, ebonized black for contrast and structure. Other species are available on request.
What does ebonized mean?
Ebonizing chemically blackens the wood, driving color into the grain rather than sitting on the surface the way paint or stain would. On Axis it gives the oak bases their deep black tone and architectural weight.
How are the drawers constructed?
Four integrated drawers, all the same size, built as dovetailed boxes on soft-close slides that open with a push rather than a pull, so the fronts stay clean and hardware-free. The fronts are grain-matched walnut, cut so the figure runs continuously across the desk. The layout can be configured for files, supplies, or equipment, built around what you keep close.
How does the cord-management system work?
A flexible cord-management system routes cables through a large pass-through opening in the surface, keeping power, chargers, and cables out of sight. The opening is sized so you can add or change devices over time, so the desk keeps up as your technology changes, whether it sits against a wall or in the middle of a room.
Can power and data be integrated?
Yes. The large cord-management opening is designed to accommodate power and charging as your setup evolves, so the desk adapts to new devices rather than locking you into today's.
What are the dimensions?
The desk shown measures 60 inches wide by 30 deep by 30 tall. Custom sizes are available, built around your room and the way you work.
Is the walnut top designed to accommodate seasonal movement?
Yes. The solid walnut top is attached with threaded inserts and slotted metal connectors, our standard method, which hold it firmly while allowing the wood to expand and contract with the seasons without splitting or cupping.
Can Axis be built in claro walnut?
The desk shown is solid black walnut. Other species, including claro walnut and white oak, are available on request, and each Axis is built around the wood you choose.
Can it be built in a custom size or layout?
Yes. The size, drawer configuration, wood, and base treatment can all be adjusted. Every Axis is built to order around your room and the way you work.
What finish options are available?
Two. The 2K polyurethane spray finish is applied in our commercial spray booth and provides a hard, durable surface for daily use. The hand rubbed oil finish using Odie's Universal Oil penetrates the wood and deepens with age.
How long does it take to build?
Lead time is 10 to 12 weeks from the time your commission is confirmed and deposit is received. This includes material selection, milling, finishing, and quality review before the piece leaves our Chicago workshop.
Does the desk come apart for delivery?
Yes. Axis disassembles, so it can be carried into the room in parts and set back together on site, and taken apart again if you ever move it. Our white glove delivery partners handle the assembly.
What makes Axis different from a standard desk?
Most desks are a top and a pedestal. Axis is built around the contrast between a warm, figured solid-walnut top and spare ebonized-oak bases, with grain-matched drawer fronts that read as part of the top and a cord-management system built to evolve with your technology. It is made to order, one at a time, in our Chicago workshop, not produced on a line.
Who builds the Axis?
Every piece that leaves Statement Chicago is built by Jerry Rodman, a furniture maker who has been in business for 11 years, and his team of four carpenters in our workshop on Chicago's north side. There is no production line and no outsourcing. When you commission a piece, you work directly with the people who build it, from the first conversation to the day it arrives in your home.
Delivery
Every piece is built to order in our Chicago workshop, and delivery is coordinated directly with you once it is finished. We build and ship nationwide. Our white glove delivery partners review the access path, handle any assembly and set the piece in place in your home.
Care
Care depends on the finish. A 2K polyurethane finish needs little more than a soft, damp cloth; avoid harsh chemical cleaners. A hand rubbed oil finish benefits from a light coat of Odie's Universal Oil once a year, or whenever the surface looks dry. With either finish, use trivets under hot dishes, wipe up standing water and keep the piece out of prolonged direct sunlight.
Lifetime warranty
Every piece is covered against manufacturing defects for the life of the piece. We stand behind what we build.
