A private office is the one room in a workplace where the furniture gets looked at closely and lived with daily. The Axis is a solid walnut desk built for that room: warm, figured wood on spare ebonized oak bases, with the storage and cabling a working executive needs built in rather than added on. It is made one at a time in our Chicago workshop, and it can be matched across a floor.
The top is solid black walnut, an inch and a half thick, sourced from sawmills across Illinois and the Midwest. The grain carries the depth and figure walnut is known for, which is what gives a private office its center. Against the black bases the wood reads warm and deliberate, and it is the piece a visitor registers before anything else in the room.
The bases are white oak, ebonized to a deep black that drives color into the grain rather than sitting on it. Two of them carry the top, set inboard, so the desk reads architectural rather than bulky and the knee space stays open. Warm organic wood above, spare black structure below.
Cable management is integrated into the top through a large pass-through opening, sized to carry power, charging, monitor and dock cabling out of sight and to be re-run when the technology on the desk changes. Because the opening is generous rather than a fixed grommet, the desk takes a monitor arm, a dock, and a phone without a rework, and it works freestanding in the middle of a room as readily as against a wall.
Four integrated drawers, dovetailed and running on soft-close slides, open with a push rather than a pull so the face stays free of hardware. The fronts are grain-matched walnut, cut so the figure runs continuously across the desk and the storage reads as part of the top. The configuration is planned around the role: files for one office, supplies and equipment for another.
Private office furniture is rarely bought one at a time. When a project calls for several, we hold the wood back together so the offices match rather than drifting in color and figure, coordinate the drawer layouts office by office, and sequence delivery to the construction or move-in schedule. Shop drawings and finish samples go to your architect or facilities team for approval before anything is cut.
The top is attached to the bases with threaded inserts and slotted metal connectors, which hold it firmly while letting solid wood expand and contract across the seasons without splitting or cupping. The desk disassembles, so it moves through a service corridor, a freight elevator, and an office door in parts and goes back together on site, and it comes apart again if the floor is ever reconfigured.
For commercial installations we recommend the 2K polyurethane spray finish, applied in our commercial spray booth, which gives a hard surface built for daily use in a working office. A hand rubbed oil finish using Odie's Universal Oil is available where a softer, more tactile surface is wanted.

Every Axis is built to order. The desk shown is one configuration; yours is sized to the office, the storage the role actually needs, and the technology on the surface, and matched across as many offices as the project requires.
Solid black walnut, an inch and a half thick, as shown. Because each top is its own wood, yours will carry its own color and figure, and for multi-office projects the boards are selected together so the offices match.
Ebonized oak as shown. Alternate treatments, including steel, are available where the interior calls for a different line.
Four integrated drawers as shown, dovetailed, soft-close, push-to-open. The layout is configured per office for files, supplies, or equipment, and a matching credenza or return can be built alongside.
Cable management is integrated into the top through a generous pass-through opening. Power, data, and charging are routed out of sight and can tie into a floor box or wall feed where one exists. We coordinate the layout with your IT team during design.
We collaborate with clients, designers, and architects, providing shop drawings and finish samples for review and approval and coordinating on materials, delivery access, elevator and corridor clearances, and installation sequencing. Multiple-office commissions are drawn, quoted, and scheduled together.
The desk shown is 60 inches wide by 30 deep by 30 tall. Dimensions are built to the office, and a return or credenza can be added where the footprint allows.
Black walnut as shown. The Axis can also be built in white oak, claro walnut, Oregon black walnut, and blackened Bavarian oak.
2K polyurethane spray finish applied in our commercial spray booth, recommended for commercial installations, or hand rubbed oil finish using Odie's Universal Oil.

Custom furniture client, Chicago

A solid walnut desk built for the private office, carried on ebonized oak bases, with four integrated drawers and cable management routed through the top. It is the commercial configuration of our Axis desk, built to order in our Chicago workshop and specified one at a time or across a floor.
It is the same design, built for a different room. The Axis Walnut Desk is our home-office version. This page covers the private-office configuration: drawer layouts planned per role, cable management coordinated with your IT team, shop drawings and finish samples for the design team, wood held back so multiple offices match, and delivery sequenced to a construction or move-in schedule.
The Axis begins at $8,500 per desk. Final pricing depends on the dimensions, the drawer configuration, the walnut selected, cable management, and finish. Multiple-office commissions are drawn, quoted, and scheduled together.
Yes, and this is the main reason to specify a maker rather than a catalog. We hold the wood back together and select boards for the whole set, so the offices read as one family rather than drifting in color and figure across a floor. Drawer layouts can still differ office by office.

A generous pass-through opening in the top carries power, data, charging, and monitor cabling out of sight, and it is sized to be re-run when the technology changes rather than fixed to one configuration. Cabling can tie into a floor box or wall feed where one exists.

Ebonizing chemically blackens the wood, driving color into the grain rather than sitting on the surface the way paint or stain would. It gives the oak bases their deep black tone and architectural weight.

Yes. We collaborate with clients, designers, and architects. We provide shop drawings and finish samples for approval before fabrication and coordinate on materials, dimensions, delivery access, and installation sequencing.
Build time is 10 to 12 weeks from the time the commission is confirmed and the deposit is received. We allow additional time up front for shop drawings, finish samples, and design-team approvals, and larger multi-office orders are scheduled in sequence.
Every piece that leaves Statement Chicago is built by Jerry Rodman, a furniture maker who has been in business for 11 years, and his team of four carpenters in our Chicago workshop. There is no production line and no outsourcing.
