Axis Walnut Desk

The Axis, a solid walnut executive desk on two ebonized oak pedestals, built for a lifetime of daily work.

Side view of the Axis, showing the walnut top, ebonized oak base, and integrated drawers.
The top is solid black walnut, an inch and a half thick, carried on two blackened oak pedestals that ground the piece and frame the drawers. Walnut against ebonized oak, warm over dark, is the contrast the desk is built on.
Inside, the drawers are dovetailed and run on soft close, push to open slides with grain matched fronts, and a generous channel keeps power and cables out of sight. The desk disassembles for delivery and moves without trouble when the room changes.

Selected for character

No two commissions begin with the same wood.

We source for proportion, color and figure, then show you the boards before the first cut is made.
Finish guidance

A finish selected for how you live.

There is no universally correct finish. We guide the choice based on the wood, the room and the realities of daily use.

The materials

Woods we build with.

Every piece is built from boards we select for you. These are the species we work in most, each sourced and chosen for its grain, width, and character.
Common questions

What clients ask before commissioning.

What is a custom desk?

A desk built to order for the way you work and the room it lives in. You choose the size, the wood, the drawer layout and the cable management, and we build it from solid hardwood rather than veneer over particleboard. No two are alike.

How much does a custom desk cost?

Commissions begin at $8,000, with final pricing set by the wood, the size, the drawer configuration and any integrated power. Every desk is quoted around your room and how you use it.

What wood species do you use?

Most desks are built in black walnut, but white oak, claro walnut and other species are available. Each board is selected for figure and shown to you before the first cut.

Does it have drawers and storage?

As many as you need. Drawers are dovetailed and run on soft close, push to open slides with grain matched fronts, and we build file drawers, shallow trays and cabinets into the base to your plan.

How is power and cabling managed?

A cord channel runs beneath the top to keep cables out of sight, and we can set a flush power and data grommet into the surface, positioned where you work. Power is quoted by configuration.

Can you size it to my room or a standing height?

Yes. Length, depth and height are all built to your space and your preference, including standing or counter heights on request.

How is it finished?

Two ways, your choice. A 2K polyurethane spray finish applied in our commercial booth for a hard, durable surface, or a hand rubbed oil finish that keeps the grain close to the hand and can be renewed over time.

How is it delivered?

The desk disassembles for transport, and our white glove delivery partners review the access path, reassemble it and set it in place on site. We build and ship nationwide.

Who builds it?

Every piece is built by Jerry Rodman, a furniture maker who has been in business for 11 years, and his team of four carpenters in our Chicago workshop. There is no production line and no outsourcing.
