Noir Relief Sideboard

The Noir Relief Sideboard, a solid walnut cabinet fronted with hand-carved, ebonized oak doors, on a brass base. Every one is carved once, by hand.

The case is solid walnut, and the doors are ebonized oak carved in a rippling relief that catches the light and shifts as you cross the room. The carving is done once, by hand, so no two Noirs are ever the same.
It rests on a slim brass base that lifts the weight of the cabinet off the floor. Inside are adjustable shelves and quiet, considered storage; outside is a piece that reads as sculpture as much as furniture.

Selected for character

No two commissions begin with the same wood.

We source for proportion, color and figure, then show you the boards before the first cut is made.
Finish guidance

A finish selected for how you live.

There is no universally correct finish. We guide the choice based on the wood, the room and the realities of daily use.
Hand-rubbed oil
A low-build, tactile surface that keeps the grain close to the hand and can be renewed over time.
2K polyurethane
Sprayed in-house in our finishing booth for a refined, highly durable surface engineered to resist moisture, heat and daily family use.
Blackened Bavarian oak with deep near-black tone and bold grain, one of the woods Statement Chicago uses for carved cabinet doors, sourced from Germany.

The materials

Woods we build with.

Every piece is built from boards we select for you. These are the species we work in most, each sourced and chosen for its grain, width, and character.
Common questions

What clients ask before commissioning.

What is a custom credenza?

A storage cabinet built to order for your room, whether you call it a credenza, a sideboard or a console. You choose the size, the wood, the door and drawer layout and the finish, and we build it from solid hardwood to fit the wall it lives on. No two are alike.

How much does a custom credenza cost?

Commissions begin at $8,000, with final pricing set by the wood, the size, the door and drawer configuration and any hand carving. Every piece is quoted around your room and what it needs to hold.

What wood species do you use?

Black walnut, white oak, claro walnut and blackened Bavarian oak are the most common, and other species are available. Each board is selected for figure and shown to you before the first cut.

What storage can you build in?

Adjustable shelves, dovetailed drawers, soft close doors, wine storage, media and cable management, and interiors fitted to what you keep. We build the inside to your plan, not just the outside.

Can the doors be hand-carved?

Yes. Our Noir and Fold pieces are fronted with ebonized oak doors carved in relief, once, by hand, so the pattern is unique to your piece. Carved fronts are optional and quoted with the commission.

Can you size it to my wall?

Yes. Length, height and depth are all built to your space, whether the piece floats on a base or sits to the floor.

How is it finished?

Two ways, your choice. A 2K polyurethane spray finish applied in our commercial booth for a hard, durable surface, or a hand rubbed oil finish that keeps the grain close to the hand and can be renewed over time.

How is it delivered?

Doors and drawers travel separately where it helps, and our white glove delivery partners review the access path, assemble the piece and set it in place on site. We build and ship nationwide.

Who builds it?

Every piece is built by Jerry Rodman, a furniture maker who has been in business for 11 years, and his team of four carpenters in our Chicago workshop. There is no production line and no outsourcing.
