The Piece

The Span Architectural Dining Table is designed around restraint. A long table that holds its own in a contemporary interior without competing with it. A table you commission once and sit down to every day. It should be worth the room it anchors.

The Wood

Span is built in white oak, sourced from Illinois sawmills and selected for straight, consistent grain. Against the angled legs and long horizontal top, the pale, warm tone keeps the piece light and open rather than heavy. White oak is also hard, durable, and dimensionally stable, and it warms with age, its surface deepening toward honey and amber tones over years of use.

The Form

The top measures 126 inches long and 40 inches wide, seating ten comfortably. Legs sit at the corners, spanning nearly the full length between them, so the long sides stay open for the people seated along them. Square corners keep the profile precise. Radiused corners are available. The top overhang is proportioned to keep the piece from reading as top heavy. From any angle, the weight feels distributed rather than accumulated at the surface.

The Joinery

The angled legs meet the top through concealed structural joinery, engineered to control the lateral forces a ten-and-a-half-foot span generates. No brackets or exposed hardware interrupt the silhouette. The structure stays entirely within the architecture of the table.

The Finish

Span is built to order in our Chicago workshop and finished one of two ways. The 2K polyurethane spray finish, applied in our commercial spray booth, gives a hard, durable surface well suited to daily use. The hand rubbed oil finish using Odie's Universal Oil penetrates the wood rather than sitting on top of it, leaving a surface that changes under the hand and deepens with age. We guide the choice based on the wood, the room, and the realities of daily use.

Meet the designer and builder

Jerry Rodman

Jerry Rodman founded Statement Chicago and designs every piece we make. He left a corporate career to build furniture, and for years he built each commission himself. Today Jerry and his team of four build every piece by hand in our Chicago workshop, and he leads each project from the first conversation to the day it is delivered.

More about Jerry

Jerry started the business eleven years ago in Chicago's Bucktown neighborhood, first as Bucktown Built and now as Statement Chicago. The shop is known for large dining tables and complex custom furniture.

Every commission begins with how you live and the room the piece will live in. Jerry presents three design options, refines the one you choose, and stays involved through delivery.

The piece shown has square corners, consistent with the architectural character of the base. Span is also available with radiused corners for a softer edge, well suited to families.

Top Composition

Single board or multi-board top available depending on width and species selected. We source specifically for what each commission requires.

Size

The piece shown measures 126 inches long by 40 inches wide and seats ten comfortably. We build Span from 78 to 144 inches long, sized to your dining room. Custom lengths and widths are available.

Before you order

What is the starting price for the Span Architectural Dining Table?

Span commissions begin at $8,300 for a 78 inch table. The 126 inch white oak table shown is $12,800. Final pricing depends on top composition, dimensions, species, and finish. Every table is built to order, and a conversation about your room produces a detailed quote.

How long does it take to build a custom white oak dining table?

Lead time is 10 to 12 weeks from the time your commission is confirmed and deposit is received. This includes material sourcing, milling, joinery, finishing, and quality review before the piece leaves our Chicago workshop.

What makes Span different from other custom dining tables?

Span is defined by its base. Corner legs placed at the four corners of the table give it an open, architectural stance that keeps the piece feeling light from every angle. The joinery connecting the angled legs to the top is concealed, keeping the silhouette clean. The design does its structural work without interrupting the visual simplicity of the piece.

Will the legs get in the way when seated at the table?

The legs on Span sit at the corners, spanning nearly the full length of the table. The corner placement leaves the long sides almost entirely unobstructed, giving diners more room than a conventional trestle base, whose supports sit inboard along the length. The open stance that gives Span its architectural character also keeps the primary seating positions clear.

Is white oak a good material for a dining table?

Yes. White oak is a hard, durable, and dimensionally stable North American hardwood, which is why it has long been used for furniture, flooring, architectural millwork, and boatbuilding. It resists dents and wear from daily use, and its pale, warm tone deepens toward honey and amber as it ages. For a table that is used every day, it is one of the best choices available.

What is concealed structural joinery?

Concealed joinery means the connection between the legs and the top is engineered to be structurally sound but not visible from the outside. Unlike exposed joinery such as wedged through mortise and tenon, concealed joinery keeps the design quiet. The structure does significant work managing the angles and loads of a table this size, but does so without announcing itself. A cleaner, more contemporary silhouette.

Can Span be built in a custom size?

Yes. The piece shown seats ten at 126 inches long by 40 inches wide. We build Span from 78 to 144 inches long, sized to your dining room. Custom lengths, widths, and heights are all available.

What wood species is Span available in?

The piece shown is built in white oak sourced from local Illinois sawmills. Span is available in every wood we work with: white oak, black walnut, claro walnut, Oregon black walnut, monkeypod, blackened Bavarian oak, and big leaf maple. The architectural base reads differently in each species. We are happy to discuss which wood suits your space.

What finish options are available?

Span is available in two finishes. The 2K polyurethane spray finish is applied in our commercial spray booth and provides a hard, durable surface that requires minimal maintenance, well suited to heavy daily use. The hand rubbed oil finish using Odie's Universal Oil penetrates the wood rather than sitting on top of it, giving you a surface that feels alive under your hands and deepens with age. We guide the choice based on the wood, the room, and the realities of daily use.

Can I visit the workshop to see the table being built?

Yes. We welcome clients to our Chicago workshop by appointment. There is no better way to understand the craft behind your piece than to see it in progress. Contact us to arrange a visit.

Who builds Span?

Every piece that leaves Statement Chicago is built by Jerry Rodman, a furniture maker who has been in business for 11 years, and his team of four carpenters in our workshop on Chicago's north side. There is no production line and no outsourcing. When you commission a table, you work directly with the people who build it, from the first conversation to the day it arrives in your home.

Delivery

Every piece is built to order in our Chicago workshop, and delivery is coordinated directly with you once it is finished. We build and ship nationwide. Our white glove delivery partners review the access path, handle any assembly and set the piece in place in your home.

Care

Care depends on the finish. A 2K polyurethane finish needs little more than a soft, damp cloth; avoid harsh chemical cleaners. A hand rubbed oil finish benefits from a light coat of Odie's Universal Oil once a year, or whenever the surface looks dry. With either finish, use trivets under hot dishes, wipe up standing water and keep the piece out of prolonged direct sunlight.

Lifetime warranty

Every piece is covered against manufacturing defects for the life of the piece. We stand behind what we build.
