The Piece

The Halo Burl Pedestal Dining Table began as a personal piece, built for a 40th birthday party. Not just a table for the evening, but a piece that could hold the memory of it.

The Burl

The top shown is solid big leaf maple burl, the wood that produces the finest figured maple in the world. The grain does not run in lines. It turns, folds, swirls, and fractures across the surface. From the dense figure across the face of the top to the waterfall of burl visible along the thick rounded edge, the wood is doing something different everywhere you look. Burl forms when a tree puts on dense, irregular growth, and that is what produces the eyes and folded grain you are looking at. It is also why it is rare, and why no two tops are the same.

The Construction

The top is solid burl throughout, roughly two and three eighths inches thick, with no veneer. The piece shown is built as a bookmatch, two halves of the same slab opened like a book so the figure mirrors across the center; a single unbroken top is also available when the right slab allows. The pedestal is steel, rolled to its cone at our local metal roller and finished in black as shown, though it can be finished in other colors to suit the room. The top is mounted to the base so the solid burl can move with the seasons without stressing the slab.

The Form

Round. Sixty inches across. A centered conical pedestal below. Nothing added that does not need to be there. The base gives the piece weight and presence, while the top carries the entire story. From a distance the table reads as clean and sculptural. Up close it becomes intimate, detailed, and impossible to repeat.

The Finish

The burl is finished to protect the figure while keeping the surface alive. Two options are available: the 2K polyurethane spray finish, applied in the commercial spray booth, gives a hard durable surface suited to daily use. The hand rubbed oil finish using Odie's Universal Oil penetrates the wood and deepens over time. We recommend the finish around the individual burl and how the table will be used, since an active figure and a busy household ask for different things.

Halo began as a table for one evening and was built to outlast it. Every commission starts from a different burl, but the intent stays the same: a singular material shaped into a piece that can hold the memories made around it.

Meet the designer and builder

Jerry Rodman

Jerry Rodman founded Statement Chicago and designs every piece we make. He left a corporate career to build furniture, and for years he built each commission himself. Today Jerry and his team of four build every piece by hand in our Chicago workshop, and he leads each project from the first conversation to the day it is delivered.

More about Jerry

Jerry started the business eleven years ago in Chicago's Bucktown neighborhood, first as Bucktown Built and now as Statement Chicago. The shop is known for large dining tables and complex custom furniture.

Every commission begins with how you live and the room the piece will live in. Jerry presents three design options, refines the one you choose, and stays involved through delivery.

Custom to the last detail

Built Around You

Every Halo is built around its own burl. The big leaf maple slab shown is unrepeatable. Yours will be its own board, chosen with you and cut to your room.

The Slab

Every Halo is built around its own burl. The slab is selected with you before work begins. The top shown is big leaf maple burl; other exceptional burl slabs are available depending on what is on hand and the color and figure you are after.

Top

Solid burl, roughly two and three eighths inches thick. Built as a bookmatch as shown, or as a single unbroken top when the right slab allows.

Size

The standard top is 60 inches in diameter. Custom diameters are available for rooms that call for something different.

Base

A steel cone, rolled at our local metal roller and finished in black as shown. Alternate colors and finishes are available if the space calls for a different treatment.

Finish

2K polyurethane spray finish or hand rubbed oil finish using Odie's Universal Oil. We recommend the finish based on the burl selected, how the table will be used, and the level of daily wear it will see.

Before you order

What kind of burl is the table shown made from?

Solid big leaf maple burl, the species that produces the finest figured maple in the world. Future Halo commissions can also be built from walnut, myrtle, redwood, or other exceptional burl slabs depending on availability and the color and figure you want.

Is the top solid burl or veneer?

Solid burl throughout, roughly two and three eighths inches thick. No veneer. The piece shown is a bookmatch, two halves of one slab mirrored across the center, and a single unbroken top is also available when the slab allows.

What is the pedestal made from?

Steel, rolled to its conical shape at our local metal roller and finished in black as shown. Other colors and finishes are available.

Is every Halo different?

Yes. Burl is unrepeatable. The top shown is one of a kind. Yours will have its own figure, its own movement, its own pattern across the surface.

Can I see the burl before the table is built?

Yes. The slab is selected with you before any work begins, with photographs and video for commissions outside Chicago. The workshop and showroom are open by appointment if you would rather stand in front of the board yourself.

What are the dimensions?

The standard table is 60 inches in diameter by 30 inches tall. Custom sizes are available.

How many people does it seat?

Six comfortably at 60 inches, with room for eight using narrower chairs. Larger diameters are available if you want eight to sit as comfortably as six.

How much does the Halo Burl Pedestal Dining Table cost?

Halo commissions begin at $9,500. Final pricing depends on the burl selected, the diameter and thickness of the top, the base finish, and the amount of stabilization the slab requires. Each table is quoted around its own piece of wood.

What finish options are available?

Two. The 2K polyurethane spray finish is applied in the commercial spray booth and provides a hard durable surface for daily use. The hand rubbed oil finish using Odie's Universal Oil penetrates the wood and deepens with age.

How long does it take to build?

Lead time is 10 to 12 weeks from commission confirmation and deposit. This includes slab selection, milling, finishing, and quality review before the piece leaves the Chicago workshop.

Who builds the Halo?

Every piece that leaves Statement Chicago is built by Jerry Rodman, a furniture maker who has been in business for 11 years, and his team of four carpenters in our workshop on Chicago's north side. There is no production line and no outsourcing. When you commission a table, you work directly with the people who build it, from the first conversation to the day it arrives in your home.

Delivery

Every piece is built to order in our Chicago workshop, and delivery is coordinated directly with you once it is finished. We build and ship nationwide. Our white glove delivery partners review the access path, handle any assembly and set the piece in place in your home.

Care

Care depends on the finish. A 2K polyurethane finish needs little more than a soft, damp cloth; avoid harsh chemical cleaners. A hand rubbed oil finish benefits from a light coat of Odie's Universal Oil once a year, or whenever the surface looks dry. With either finish, use trivets under hot dishes, wipe up standing water and keep the piece out of prolonged direct sunlight.

Lifetime warranty

Every piece is covered against manufacturing defects for the life of the piece. We stand behind what we build.
