The Piece

The Arc Single Slab Dining Table is built around one board. A single slab of claro walnut cut from a tree that grew for approximately 125 years in California's Sacramento River Valley before it became a table. Everything else on the piece exists to let that top speak.

The Wood

Claro walnut is the wood Northern California is known for. Juglans hindsii, native to the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys, prized above almost any domestic hardwood for the range of color and figure it carries. This slab runs from warm auburn through deep brown, with the darker streaking claro is known for and the occasional grey, red, and purple cast that gives the species its reputation. The grain moves the way only an old tree's does, dense with figure and unrepeatable from one board to the next. The tree was likely planted around the turn of the last century, when growers across California were grafting English walnut onto claro rootstock to start their orchards.

The Form

The top is a single slab. Ten and a half feet long, four feet wide, left as one continuous board rather than milled into strips and glued back together. You read the full width of the tree in one surface. The edges are milled clean and square, giving the slab's organic figure a precise, architectural frame. At thirty inches it sits at standard dining height, but the presence is anything but standard.

The Base

The slab is paired with a sculptural black steel arc base. The curve is deliberate, a quiet counterpoint to the mass and warmth of the top. Where the wood is organic and irregular, the base is spare and exact. The arc carries the load without competing for attention, and its minimal footprint keeps the underside of the table open and the slab reading as the whole piece.

The Finish

The natural voids and fissures in the slab are filled with black epoxy, which stabilizes the wood and sharpens the contrast against its auburn and brown figure. From there the top is finished one of two ways. The 2K polyurethane spray finish, applied in our commercial spray booth, gives a hard, durable surface well suited to daily use. The hand rubbed oil finish using Odie's Universal Oil penetrates the wood rather than sitting on top of it, leaving the surface alive under your hands. A conversation about your room and how you use it will point to the right one. Every Arc Single Slab Dining Table is built to order in our Chicago workshop.

Meet the designer and builder

Jerry Rodman

Jerry Rodman founded Statement Chicago and designs every piece we make. He left a corporate career to build furniture, and for years he built each commission himself. Today Jerry and his team of four build every piece by hand in our Chicago workshop, and he leads each project from the first conversation to the day it is delivered.

More about Jerry

Jerry started the business eleven years ago in Chicago's Bucktown neighborhood, first as Bucktown Built and now as Statement Chicago. The shop is known for large dining tables and complex custom furniture.

Every commission begins with how you live and the room the piece will live in. Jerry presents three design options, refines the one you choose, and stays involved through delivery.

Before you order

What is claro walnut?

Claro walnut is the trade name for Juglans hindsii, the Northern California black walnut, native to the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys. It is prized among domestic hardwoods for its dramatic color range, from pale brown to deep chocolate with grey, red, and purple casts, and for the figure it carries, especially in older trees.

How much does an Arc Single Slab Dining Table cost?

Arc commissions begin at $10,500. Final pricing depends on the slab's size, rarity, and figure, along with the base, epoxy work, and finished dimensions. Every Arc is built to order, and a conversation about your room produces a detailed quote.

How old is the slab?

The slab in this piece was cut from a claro walnut tree approximately 125 years old. A tree that age was most likely planted around the turn of the last century, when California growers were grafting English walnut onto claro rootstock to establish their orchards.

Is the tabletop really a single piece of wood?

Yes. The top is one continuous slab, ten and a half feet long and four feet wide, not narrow boards milled and glued back together. You are looking at the full width of a single tree in one surface.

Why is there black epoxy in the top?

The natural voids and fissures in the slab are filled with black epoxy for two reasons. It stabilizes the wood for daily use, and it sharpens the contrast against the auburn and brown of the grain, making the figure read more clearly.

Can I get a different slab or a different size?

Yes. Every Arc is built around its own slab, so no two are alike. Work begins from the boards on hand and a slab is selected with you, then cut to the length and width your room calls for.

What finish options are available?

Two. The 2K polyurethane spray finish is applied in our commercial spray booth and provides a hard, durable surface that stands up to heavy daily use. The hand rubbed oil finish using Odie's Universal Oil penetrates the wood and deepens with age. Both are worth considering. A short conversation about your household and how the table will be used will point to the right choice.

How many people does it seat?

At ten and a half feet by four feet, the Arc comfortably seats ten to twelve. Custom sizes can be scaled up or down to fit your room.

How long does it take to build?

Lead time is 10 to 12 weeks from the time your commission is confirmed and deposit is received. This includes slab selection, milling, epoxy work, finishing, and quality review before the piece leaves our Chicago workshop.

Who builds the Arc?

Every piece that leaves Statement Chicago is built by Jerry Rodman, a furniture maker who has been in business for 11 years, and his team of four carpenters in our workshop on Chicago's north side. There is no production line and no outsourcing. When you commission a table, you work directly with the people who build it, from the first conversation to the day it arrives in your home.

Delivery

Every piece is built to order in our Chicago workshop, and delivery is coordinated directly with you once it is finished. We build and ship nationwide. Our white glove delivery partners review the access path, handle any assembly and set the piece in place in your home.

Care

Care depends on the finish. A 2K polyurethane finish needs little more than a soft, damp cloth; avoid harsh chemical cleaners. A hand rubbed oil finish benefits from a light coat of Odie's Universal Oil once a year, or whenever the surface looks dry. With either finish, use trivets under hot dishes, wipe up standing water and keep the piece out of prolonged direct sunlight.

Lifetime warranty

Every piece is covered against manufacturing defects for the life of the piece. We stand behind what we build.
