The Piece

The Meridian is a conference table that is mostly tree. Sixteen and a half feet of monkeypod in one unbroken slab, its natural edges left where the tree drew them, carried on a steel base built to disappear beneath it. Where the Apex is steel and drama and the Horizon is quiet architecture, the Meridian is the organic one: the room's one piece of unedited nature, scaled to seat sixteen.

The Wood

The top is monkeypod, Albizia saman, the rain tree of Central America, sourced from Costa Rica. It is named for a canopy that can spread wider than the tree is tall, and beneath that canopy is a trunk three to four feet across, which is why monkeypod is one of the great slab woods of the world and why a single board can carry a table this long. The heartwood runs golden through warm caramel to dark brown, with the darker streaks that follow the grain across the board, and a thin band of pale sapwood traces the live edge, so the outline of the tree reads as a ribbon of light wood around a golden center.

The Fill

A natural fissure runs most of the length of this slab, and rather than cut around it we filled it with black epoxy and left it visible. The same treatment stabilizes the smaller voids and knots across the surface. The result is a hard, level working surface that still shows exactly where the tree split, a dark line running the length of the table against the gold. It is the signature of the piece, and on your slab it will fall somewhere else entirely.

The Base

The base is steel, finished in black powder coat, built as four open trapezoidal frames joined by a single stretcher running the full length of the table. The frames are open rather than solid and the finish is flat black, so the base recedes and the slab appears to float above it. The footprint sits inboard of the ends, leaving the length clear for the people seated around it.

The Form

Sixteen feet six inches long, forty-five inches wide, at thirty inches standard height, the Meridian seats sixteen with room to work. The slab is two inches thick with its edges left live along both sides, so the width of the table changes as it runs, narrowing and swelling the way the tree did.

The Construction

The top is a single two-inch slab. Its natural voids and fissures are stabilized with epoxy so an organic surface stands up to daily commercial use, and the slab is fastened to the base with threaded inserts and slotted connections that hold it firmly while letting a board this size expand and contract across the seasons. Power and data are integrated into the top, set flush and positioned to your seating plan, with cabling routed out of sight through the base. The base separates from the top for delivery, so a sixteen-foot table moves into the room in pieces and goes back together on site.

The Finish

Every Meridian is built to order in our Chicago workshop. The monkeypod is finished in 2K polyurethane, sprayed in our commercial spray booth, for a hard, durable surface suited to the wear a working conference table sees, and the steel base wears a flat black powder coat.

Custom to the last detail

Built Around You

Every Meridian is built to order around its own slab. The monkeypod shown is unrepeatable; yours will be its own board, selected with you and sized to your boardroom and the number of seats you need.

The Top

A single live edge monkeypod slab, two inches thick, as shown. Because each top is its own board, yours will carry its own width, color, figure, and pattern of natural voids. The slab is selected and shown to you before the first cut.

The Fill

Black epoxy as shown, filling the natural fissure and voids and left visible. Fills can be tinted to other colors, or kept as close to invisible as the board allows, depending on how much you want the character of the wood to read.

The Base

Steel in a black powder coat, four open trapezoidal frames on a full-length stretcher, as shown. Alternate steel finishes and base treatments are available if the room calls for a different line.

Power and Data

Integrated power and data are available and specified for most boardroom commissions. Power outlets, USB and USB-C charging, and HDMI and data ports can be set into flush or pop-up modules in the top, with cabling routed out of sight through the base and tied into a floor box where one exists. Power and data are quoted by configuration, separate from the base table.

For Your Project

We collaborate with clients, designers, and architects on commercial commissions, providing shop drawings and finish samples for review and approval and coordinating on materials, delivery access, and installation.

Size

The piece shown is sixteen feet six inches long by forty-five inches wide, seating sixteen. Custom lengths and widths are available, sized to the slab, your boardroom, and the number of seats you need.

Species

Monkeypod as shown. The Meridian can also be built in claro walnut, Oregon black walnut, blackened Bavarian oak, and big leaf maple, all of which yield slabs wide and long enough for a conference table.

Finish

2K polyurethane spray finish applied in our commercial spray booth, as shown. A hand rubbed oil finish using Odie's Universal Oil is also available. A conversation about the room and how the table will be used will point to the right one.

Before you commission

What is the Meridian Live Edge Conference Table?

A sixteen-and-a-half-foot conference table built from a single live edge monkeypod slab, with black epoxy filling its natural fissure and voids, carried on a black powder-coated steel base with integrated power. It is the organic counterpart to our steel-based Apex and our architectural Horizon, built to order in our Chicago workshop.

How much does the Meridian cost?

The Meridian begins at $10,700 for the configuration shown, quoted by commission. Final pricing depends on the slab selected, its length, width, and figure, the base, and the finish. Power and data are quoted by configuration and are not included in the starting price. Every table is built around an individual board and quoted around your room.

What are the dimensions and how many does it seat?

The table shown is sixteen feet six inches long, forty-five inches wide, and thirty inches tall, seating sixteen with room to work. Because the edges are live, the width changes along the length of the table. Custom sizes are available, sized to your boardroom.

What is monkeypod?

Monkeypod is Albizia saman, the rain tree of Central America, and we source ours from Costa Rica. Its canopy can spread wider than the tree is tall, and its trunk runs three to four feet across, which is why it produces some of the widest single slabs in the world. The heartwood is golden to dark brown with darker streaks, set off by a thin, pale band of sapwood at the live edge.

Why is the fissure filled with black epoxy?

Because the crack is part of the board, and cutting around it would mean losing the board. Filling the fissure and the surrounding voids with epoxy stabilizes them and produces a hard, level working surface, while leaving the split visible as a dark line running the length of the table. On the piece shown the fill is black. It can be tinted to other colors or kept closer to invisible, depending on how much character you want the surface to carry.

Is the top a single slab?

Yes. The top is one board of monkeypod, two inches thick, with both natural edges intact. There are no seams and no glued-up strips. This is only possible because of the width monkeypod grows to, and it is why no two Meridians are the same table.

Is a live edge top durable enough for daily office use?

Yes. The natural voids and fissures are stabilized with epoxy, and the surface is finished in 2K polyurethane sprayed in our commercial spray booth, which gives a hard, durable surface built for the wear a working conference table sees.

What is the base made of?

Steel, finished in a flat black powder coat, built as four open trapezoidal frames joined by a stretcher running the full length of the table. The frames are open so the base reads light beneath the slab, the footprint is set inboard so nobody seated meets a leg, and the base separates from the top for delivery.

Can power and data be integrated?

Yes, and the table shown has power integrated into the top. Power outlets, USB and USB-C charging, and HDMI and data ports can be set into flush or pop-up modules, positioned to your seating plan, with cabling routed out of sight through the base and tied into a floor box where one exists. Power and data are quoted by configuration.

How does a solid slab this long stay flat?

The slab is fastened to the base with threaded inserts and slotted connections that hold the top firmly while allowing the wood to expand and contract across the seasons. Solid wood moves, and the attachment is designed to let it move without splitting or cupping.

Can it be built in a custom size?

Yes. Length, width, and height are built to your room and the number of seats you need, within what the slab allows. Because each Meridian is built around an individual board, size and wood are discussed together.

What wood species are available?

Monkeypod as shown. The Meridian can also be built in claro walnut, Oregon black walnut, blackened Bavarian oak, and big leaf maple. Each board is selected for figure and shown to you before fabrication begins.

How is it finished?

The table shown is finished in 2K polyurethane, applied in our commercial spray booth, for a hard surface suited to daily commercial use. A hand rubbed oil finish using Odie's Universal Oil is also available and keeps the grain closer to the hand. The steel base wears a flat black powder coat.

How long does a Meridian take to build?

Build time is 12 to 14 weeks from the time the commission is confirmed and the deposit is received, and includes slab selection, epoxy work, fabrication, power integration, finishing, and quality review. We allow additional time up front for shop drawings, finish samples, technology coordination, and design-team approvals.

Do you work with architects, designers, and facilities teams?

Yes. We collaborate with clients, designers, and architects on commercial commissions, providing shop drawings and finish samples for approval and coordinating on materials, engineering, delivery access, and installation.

How is a table this large delivered?

The top and base travel separately, so a sixteen-and-a-half-foot table moves into the room in pieces rather than one. Our white glove delivery partners review the access path, assemble the table, and set it in place on site. We build, ship, and install nationwide.

Who builds the Meridian?

Every piece that leaves Statement Chicago is built by Jerry Rodman, a furniture maker who has been in business for 11 years, and his team of four carpenters in our Chicago workshop. There is no production line and no outsourcing.
